The Blade Trap, also simply known as a Trap, is a recurring, commonplace type of obstacle found in dungeons in The Legend of Zelda series.
Blade Traps are formidable, mechanized obstacles equipped with spikes or blades. They come in a variety of types and are always impervious to all attacks, with some either staying dormant until approached, and others moving in a set path.
Blade Traps as dormant obstacles are common to the 2D games, in titles such as The Legend of Zelda, Link's Awakening and the Oracle series. Generally speaking, upon crossing the path of a Blade Trap, whether vertical or horizontal, the trap will react instantly by closing in rapidly on the intruder. Contact with a Blade Trap damages Link (usually one Heart by default) and may prove deadly in some circumstances. After being set off, they will slowly return to their original position.
Other Blade Traps glide along a projected path, specifically those in Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, but also appears in some 2D games as well, such as A Link to the Past. These Blade Traps move along the ground, regardless of Link's presence, at the same constant speed, competing for space. The path of these traps vary; with some either moving from one side to the next, and others moving in a complete circle.
Other, although much less common, types of Blade Traps have also appeared throughout the series. A Link to the Past and the Oracle series introduced giant versions of Blade Traps, which move in a set path around the room, taking up large amounts of space. In Twilight Princess, a stone model used in the Arbiter's Grounds and a gilded model used in the Temple of Time appear, both of which appear as obstacles that move along the Spinner rails. The boss of Arbiter's Grounds, Stallord, makes great use of them in its boss battle. These Blade Traps are the only kind that can be destroyed, as the Dominion Rod may be used to bring a nearby statue to life, consequently smashing the trap in question with its ax.
A similar type of trap called the Chaser appears in the Oracle series, Four Swords and The Minish Cap, which is a sentient bladed trap that will follow Link down narrow corridors once he is within its line of vision.
