Appearances
Ocarina of Time
In Ocarina of Time, Link gets the letter from the princess herself in Hyrule Castle's Courtyard. Zelda's Letter is required to get past the guard in Kakariko Village at the gate that leads to the Death Mountain Trail. After Link gives the guard the letter, he will open the gate, which will remain open for the rest of the game.
Spirit Tracks
In Spirit Tracks, Princess Zelda gives the letter to Link inside Hyrule Castle along with the Royal Engineer's Certificate. The letter includes a map of the castle with a path leading to Zelda's room.
