Cheep-Cheeps are small fish that dwell in the many waters of Hyrule, Koholint Island, Labrynna and Holodrum. They only appear in underground sidescrolling areas. While swimming underwater, Link's sword can quickly eliminate them, so they do not pose much of a threat. Some Cheep-Cheeps will leap directly up at Link from the water, and if Link jumps on top of them, he will defeat them. The waters of Four Swords Adventures also has extremely large Mega Cheep-Cheep alongside the normal size. These will charge at Link and cause a lot of damage, and must be swum past quickly.
Cheep-Cheeps are very common enemies in the Mario series and have been in the Mario series since the very first game. There are many different species of them; some have wings and can fly, while others are very civilized and can live above the water. Those in the Zelda games seem to primarily appear in underground pools, however.
Tingle's Balloon Fight
A large Cheep-Cheep also appears in Tingle's Balloon Fight DS. If Tingle grazes the water too closely, it will leap out of the water and grab him. It will also target any other enemies that drift by.
Trivia
- The Link's Awakening Nintendo Player's Guide erroneously refers to these enemies as Cheep-Sheep.
- Cheep-Cheep's Japanese name, Puku-Puku, is the Japanese onomatopoeia for bubbling noises.
