In Link's Awakening, the main item is the Magic Rod. And after defeating the boss, Hot Head, Link is awarded the Thunder Drum. In A Link to the Past, the item is the Mirror Shield, and the boss is Trinexx.
A Link to the Past
In A Link to the Past, Turtle Rock can only be accessed by teleporting above it on the outside and using the Quake Medallion on its head. This will then unlock the entrance to the dungeon. This Dungeon houses the Mirror Shield and the Boss, Trinexx.
Link's Awakening
When arriving outside the dungeon Link discovers that the entrance is blocked by a giant reptile head. By playing the Ocarina the head awakes and starts to attack Link. By hitting the head with the sword will defeat it leaving the entrance clear. Once you get the magic rod, you can melt the ice rooms and fight the boss.
Trivia
- It is the only Zelda dungeon that forces you to battle a boss to directly enter.
