Talk:Main Page
From Zelda Wiki.org
Peefy: And it's starting to take a good shape. An excellent shape to be frank.
Category links on main page
To be able to link to Categories without making them look like external links, just write what you would as if you were categorising a page and then put a colon infront of Category. Category:Zelda. Voila.
Sandbox
I made a sandbox here for people to experiment with edits.
Simply amazing...
Ah... Something to keep me busy. ^_^ Kudos to you, ZU, for coming up with this brilliant idea! Come to think of it, didn't I suggest something like this a year or so ago? Oh well, it doesn't matter.
I am pleased to officially (officially, hah!) announce that I will treat any and all articles of questionable grammar with utmost care. Please, if anyone has something s/he doesn't want to take care of right away, you should notify me. I find an odd enjoyment in editting the work of others. I don't understand it, but it should greatly benefit this latest addition to ZU. BTW, hi Peefy! :D
I have one quick question, though... Is there any way for low-clearance members to creat a new category? I would like to create one titled "Gamer Terminology" that will give definitions of terms and abbreviations that not everyone might understand.

I added some pages eailer today, and I just came back and they were all gone. I checked the log and it dosen't say they were deleted so I was wandering what happened?

Hard to locate
It seems to a lot of people that finding the actual articles/wiki is quite hard. Can you maybe put it in the navigation named as something. Like named A-M,N-Z or wtvr.
And also, since this is the community wiki now, you think we should create a new template for it? Make it more zelda-ish...
- The easiest way to locate an article is to use the search feature. As for skin, GoldenChaos is working on it. --Sheik-Yumil1988 19:33, 8 October 2006 (CDT)

Kudos
Excellent job on the main page. It looks amazing! This should attract a lot of people and hopefully it will inspire even more to help with the wiki. Oh and btw, there is a broken link. the bosses link on the main page actually links to the dungeon page. Just a little heads up. But all the same, wonderful job! --Gambit8585
- Fixed the Bosses link. --Lars 17:39, 23 October 2006 (CDT)
- As some people know (or will learn) about me is that i am always coming up with new ideas...possibly too many. But my newest idea is to add a featured video as well, to go with the image and article. The problem is that I don't think ZeldaWiki.org has enough videos for once a month. Give me opinions on my talk page. --Claire 22:59, 1 February 2008 (EST)
Twilight Princess Geography
In order to avoid confusion about the locations of places in Twilight Princess, I believe it is important for everyone to use the locations of the same version of the game. Since Twilight Princess was flipped for the Wii, I believe that the GameCube locations should be used.

Pages for Deletion
Hey, just wanted to drop the admins a line, and I figured this would be the easiest and most noticeable place. I know you all are busy with real-life stuff and what not, but I've been cleaning up the uncategorized page and there are a number of pages that need to be deleted. No rush, but I figured I would just compile the list here to make it easier on you guys. Here are the pages: Darknuts, Item, Items, Shiek, Snake's Remains Dungeon, Sword and Shield Maze, Redeads. All of their discussion pages have my reasoning, and if something isn't sound, just ignore it. Lata! -- Gambit8585
- Redirects are easier, champ. I'll work through these now. Thesubrosian 01:32, 7 January 2007 (CST)

Trade Sequences
Anyone think it would be a good idea for a Trade Sequences category? Then we could break that category down by game or something along those lines. --Gambit8585
Zelda Comic
I am currently working on a zelda comic series in my spare time. I already drew 20+ comics and am writing them just about every day(in school). As of now they are all hand drawn and it will be at least till the summer before I am finished and am able to transfer them onto the computer. I'm hoping to post it on this site and if you are interested contact me with ideas/comments/etc. My email is Marcuslehner21@gmail.com.

FanMedia and the wiki
What's the policy on (a) content concerning Zelda FanMedia (particularly FanFic and Fan made games) and (b) Ficticious content, created by fans, and labelled as such? Personally I'm divide; articles I've seen created today includng FOD and Backstory aren't exactly inspiring, but there really is some good fic out there and Typhoon's Zelda Online is looking more promising all the time. Certainly these are worth mentions? --PIE
Featured Picture
I think that there should be a featured picture along with the featured article. I think it would make the main page more interesting. Does anyone else agree with me? 42bens 18:09, 3 July 2007 (PDT)
An idea for this would be one that has no logo on it, very high quality, maybe rare, and is an important ZELDA thing. A few examples are:
These are just to get the general idea started. I just think it would make the main page look better and more like wikipedia. 42bens 14:47, 14 July 2007 (PDT)
Sounds like a pretty good idea to me. If anyone else is unclear on the concept, have a look here. It would be a good way to feature articles on the Main Page which do not fulfil the criteria to be a Featured Article, but have other merits such as an interesting or unusual image. (PS thanks for using one of the images I found and reformatted as an example :) --Adamcox82 16:02, 14 July 2007 (PDT)
- It's a well done picture. Just like the Shiro one. But you get the point. How many people have to agree on it for it to happen. I spoke to Jase about it and he said that if some good images could be found then it could be done. 42bens 08:06, 15 July 2007 (PDT)
- I'd say as long as Jason is happy for it to go ahead, it's not necessary to look for others to support the idea (as long as nobody has any valid objections). However, it will have to wait until he gets back, as I'm not prepared to go ahead and implement it without his say-so. --Adamcox82 08:35, 15 July 2007 (PDT)
- Eh, I'm a bit confused as to where the featured picture thing would go on the main page. I would suggest at the bottom, like Wikipedia, but we have the announcements there, and it should go above that. Perhaps just put it directly below the Featured Article bit. If you can figure it out, or think of something better, go for it. --Jase 16:13, 4 August 2007 (PDT)
- I'm just glad it finally happened. It looks good. How are we selecting new ones? Putting them here? If so I can get a start on finding future candidates... 42bens 11:28, 6 August 2007 (PDT)
External Icon
Not sure where to ask about this, so I'll put it here. Right now, the external link icon looks a bit wierd (at least, to me) with the white inside of it. Therefore, I uploaded another version that could be used in its stead. So, what I'm asking is do you want to replace with
(don't worry about alignment--it's because of how the background image for the external icon is vertically centered on the line)? I know the css needed to change the icons, if it comes to that, but what do all of you think? --Skizzerz Talk - Contribs 10:25, 19 July 2007 (PDT)
- If the color were made to match the light blue of the layout, then I'd say it's a nice arrow! --Jase 16:11, 4 August 2007 (PDT)
- OK, I recoloured it first in the light blue text-box colour
. This looks quite dark, although I have always thought the arrow stood out a bit too much... Anyway, I did a second one with the lighter blue used for the bullet points
, so I'm not sure which would be best, or if we should try something inbetween. --Adamcox82 17:07, 4 August 2007 (PDT)
- I was thinking the light blue used for the 2px borders. You'll see the color around the navigation boxes, etc. --Jase 05:33, 5 August 2007 (PDT)
- OK, here's one using the border colour
, I quite like the look of this one. --Adamcox82 07:43, 5 August 2007 (PDT)
- Looks good. I might make it a little brighter on my own, but other than that, I'll upload it in a little bit. --Jase 13:45, 5 August 2007 (PDT)
- OK, here's one using the border colour

- OK, I recoloured it first in the light blue text-box colour
Ok, well, whenever you get around to it, here is the css to implement it (put it in MediaWiki:Monobook.css or MediaWiki:Common.css):
a.external {
background:url(http://www.zeldawiki.org/images/9/90/External_link_icon%28final%3F%29.png) center right no-repeat !important;
padding-right:20px !important;
padding-left:0px !important;
}
That one uses Adamcox82's Image:External link icon(final?).png, so you would need to replace the URL in the parenthesis with the URL of the final version if you aren't using that one. --Skizzerz Talk - Contribs 16:56, 8 August 2007 (PDT)

- The image problem has to do with whether or not we use ImageMagick or GD to process the images when resized. I know all about the problem and how to fix it - the problem was that, on the new server, ImageMagick was not installed. Therefore, I installed it. Problem solved. However, I DO realize that there are some problems creating very large thumbnails, which I will deal with. --Jase 19:27, 27 August 2007 (EDT)

- Yes, the current featured pic has been up for a long while, but that's because no other picture has 10 votes yet. So go and vote!
- I deleted the images. Photos of footballers are not appropriate content for a non-sports computer game wiki. This is not facebook; you can't just upload any old images you want, or that you think are "cool" (or "mint"). Fanart is not acceptable (at least not in articles). Non game-related images are widely unacceptable; with the exception being 1-2 images to personalise your user page. Just keep it on-topic and you won't find things being deleted or reverted. And if you're not sure, please ask first. --Adam 16:36, 15 December 2007 (EST)

- Hmmm, seems kind of useful, but fairly complex and difficult to administrate. Historically, these kind of projects have been undertaken independently (by myself and others) and completed without any overseeing or collaboration. If you wanted to create an example of how it could work, you can do it yourself by creating a new page called Zelda Wiki.org:Trouble Center (although it would probably need a new name, as that name seems to have been taken from a place in the Mario games). --Adam 16:44, 15 December 2007 (EST)

Next Legend of Zelda Game for the Wii
Has anyone seen the picture from http://www.zelda2008.com/ yet? I just recently discovered it, and it's been going around this is possibly from the new game planned for the Wii. It's titled "Where All Roads Meet," and its shiny tiled floors and the reflection in them makes the doorway look remarkably like the Door of Time to me. Does anyone else think that's what it could be? Or does anyone else have any ideas as to what it could mean for the new game? Link87 13:51, 21 December 2007 (EST)
- To be honest, when I first saw that site about a month ago, I thought it was fake. I still do, though I have to say it's odd that the image has changed in the meantime (it used to be Link's face and something else at first). It's too soon for a new zelda, especially a 3D one. At the end of 2008, I'm not expecting more than a few screenshots and trailers which eventually will be nothing like the game. Also, I find it odd there's no japanese equilavent to that site to be found on the internet. Odd, as each zelda game first gets a japanese site up and then later an english one. IfIHaveTo 14:06, 21 December 2007 (EST)
Has it been said when they first began working on the new Zelda for the Wii? I know it's been in planning, but I haven't heard what they've started on as of yet or when. If they had been preparing a few things ahead of time, it could be a teaser nonetheless. Although you have a good point about the Japanese site. I do remember Miyamoto saying that this next Zelda would be drastically different from any Zelda experience we have experienced yet to date. However, if this picture does have a connection to the new game, it could indicate that it might take place around the time of Ocarina of Time since the Door of Time is still intact and apparently the Temple of Time that contains it, unless it was rebuilt following the Twilight Invasion of course. As to the absence of a companion Japanese site though, I cannot be sure, but has anyone ever found one to your knowledge? It could very well be a fake (as we see many all the time), however this rendition of the Door of Time seems unique, and as you said before, the image was different mere weeks ago. Like you, I wasn't expecting another Zelda in 2008, more like 2009/2010. I mean it'd be awesome if it did, but I tend to doubt it seeing as Miyamoto has a habit of severely critiquing the games up to the very last minute, even ordering them to be completely redone if it doesn't meet his standards. I'd say the only way these images could be real is if they had been working on the game in the background for some time, perhaps even in the final stages of Twilight Princess's production. Have you heard any news about where they are with the new game or how long they've actually been working on it? Link87 02:29, 23 December 2007 (EST)
For as far as I know, there is no japanese equilavent. As for news on when the game is released: There is none. That's a big issue as well. Nintendo tends to keep their projects secret until they really have to start (based on original release date)getting people interested. They are one of the few companies that knows how easily original ideas are stolen and put in another game just before they can release theirs. Also, they release info in a place where it can be seen (pretty pointless otherwise). Has an official Nintendo site refered to that site in a link? I don't think so. It's just too early for another 3D Zelda that has to make full use of the Wii controller (and they better make Link a lefty again). But regardless of whether it is fake or not, I tend to think, does it matter? Before TP was released, many where like "OMG, this is after OOT so Link is gonna die and the whole world will be flooded at the end". With all info released prior to PH, people were like "OMG, the Gerudo (Jolene) return" and something odd about Bellum being a creature created or awakened by Ganondorf. Those rumors have no value. What is wrong with just waiting for the game and seeing what it is all about when playing it, instead of trying to figure it out before it is released. Nintendo would get a star from me if the next 3D Zelda game would not be about the main story (like MM, OOx and TMC), but I'm near confident it will be about the goddesses, the triforce, hyrule and all elements of the main story again (so, the DoT is not unlikely to appear). IfIHaveTo 05:30, 23 December 2007 (EST)
Acronyms
What's the general consensus for using acronyms within the Wiki pages themselves? Personally, it looks more professional to give the full title of the game (i.e. Phantom Hourglass rather than PH, etc.), but that's just my thoughts. Anyone else? Ando 15:13, 10 January 2008 (EST)
- That's basically the general consensus :) The accepted "standard" is to italicise titles, and use a piped link to the full title like so:
- ''[[The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass|Phantom Hourglass]]''
- This looks the most professional, links to the correct game article avoiding use of redirects or disambiguations, and is the clearest to read. --Adam 15:49, 10 January 2008 (EST)
Illegal content
Another question about the wiki's standards: what are the wiki's restrictions on illegal content (ROM's, scanslations, etc.). I, for one, would like to see any and all links to such content removed, but you know. This can be a very... divided issue, so what do you think? Ando 15:49, 16 January 2008 (EST)
How do you add a page?
I've been needing to add a page for the mini-boss of the Ancient Tomb of Oracle of Ages. Its name is Blue Stalfos but I've never seen a link or a page about him. If any one know how to add a page please let me know. Oh and no he is not a regular Blue Stalfos if thats what your thinking.
- Search and make sure that the page you want to create does NOT exist in any form (search misspelled titles, etc.). If nothing, search for the correct title. If no results are found, then at the top of the screen you'll see something along the lines of "No results were found. You can create this page." Click on "create this page" to, well, create the page. :P Then just edit it as normal and save it. Ando 09:54, 18 January 2008 (EST)
I'm sure there's another way, but the way I do it is I type up something like, Grand Fairy. Then it will say that there is no page under that name and it asks me if I would like to "create it". I click on "create it" and it takes me to a blank editing page and I can start typing. But because there is already a page called "Blue Stalfos" create the page with this name "Blue Stalfos (Mini-boss). Make sure you create a disambiguation page, to do this search for "Blue Stalfos" and you'll be redirected to "Stalfos". At the top of the page you'll see this: Redirected from Blue stalfos, click on it and change the page it takes you to into a disambiguation page.--Link hero of light 10:07, 18 January 2008 (EST)
"Have you voted for -----?"
Hey. The "Have you voted for -----?" boxes are showing up above the picture and text in their respective boxes, at least on my monitor. I looked at the code and I'm not exactly sure what causes it. Perhaps adding <br clear="all" /> right before that "have you" box? Ando 20:02, 21 January 2008 (EST)
- I hadn't noticed amy problem with the positioning, but to be fair it was just something quick that I botched together :S Anyone else seeing this? You could try copying the mainpage source code and tinkering with it in the sandbox to see if there's a fix - I doubt I can do much since I can't "see" the problem! --Adam (talk) 03:17, 23 January 2008 (EST)

How come it dosent say thanks to Whoever for controbuting this picture--Zanramon 16:52, 22 January 2008 (EST)
I was wondering the same thing. I don't blame you for asking, you're the one who uploaded the image and you should be credited for that. --Link hero of light 18:43, 22 January 2008 (EST)
- The simple answer is, I took it off a while back, because I was sick of writing my own name there! I didn't particularly like the wording, and since most of the images featured previously had been uploaded by me (or I'd re-uploaded a "better quality" version) I felt forced to put my name against it, which I didn't like. Even this picture was originally quite a low-res version, so I had to get the full size and re-upload (I notice you then re-re-uploaded the same version), so technically I'd have to put both our names (which again I've had to do in the past and didn't like).
- However, all my (self obsessed?) griping aside, if the general consensus is that you'd all like to see the images credited again, let me know and I'll put it back up :) --Adam (talk) 03:17, 23 January 2008 (EST)
I would like to see users credited for uploading the picture.--Link hero of light 20:12, 23 January 2008 (EST)
- The truth is, you are not allowed to be given credit for the picture. You gave the picture up to an open website. The picture is now attributed to nobody (except its true copyright holder, Nintendo) under the GNU Free Document License. Even if we gave you credit, you wouldn't be entitled to it, because it would inherently contradict the founding principles of the wiki system - free, open content that belongs to everyone. And that is the better reason why uploaders won't be credited. --Jase 21:29, 23 January 2008 (EST)
Strategies for bosses
with permission from author for use on wiki
Instead of having a confusing text discussion just replicating a gamefaqs guide, and as a compromise with the visual guides earlier here, how about we have embedded youtube videos? We'd have to get permission from the author's first, of course, but it would work something like this:
—Preceding unsigned comment added by KrytenKoro (talk) 21:15, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
- Good idea. I fixed up the video link you inserted so that it works. Don't think there's really any need to seek permission to embed a youtube video though? They're public domain, and the links given with each video on youtube.com, and after it finishes playing, actively encourage the videos to be freely distributed? Tell me if i'm wrong. —Adam (talk) 02:15, 12 February 2008 (EST)
- I was pretty sure videos on youtube were still copyrighted, since they had that big huff about not ripping videos from youtube, and any videos we were looking for would definitely reside in that gray area, since they might legally belong to Nintendo. Though, since we would be using them as the subject of discussion, it should count as fair use.
- However, whether it was public domain or not, its always polite to ask for permission, and it would only cost us at most an hour of our time to ask somebody with many boss videos for permission to use them all. If we can't get in contact with the person, I guess, like if they had stopped going to youtube, I guess it would be okay to just link the video, but it never hurts to ask.KrytenKoro 16:14, 12 February 2008 (EST)
- I see what you mean, and I guess you're right. It's my personal view that, once an individual (not organisation) chooses to place material on the internet, it becomes entirely public domain. But even this wiki's disclaimer claims copyright on all information to it's respective writers, so I guess I'm wrong :) And yes, it is polite to ask/be asked (as I was here, or didn't do here...). I guess we can leave the legal/copyright issues aside, as those would be between Nintendo and Youtube and it's users. But anyway, back to the actual suggestion, yes I like the idea of including video guides, and if others agree I'll create a template version of the format above. —Adam (talk) 02:17, 13 February 2008 (EST)

Are we allowed to make userboxes? If we are, how do we go about "legalizing" them, and make them suitable for the wiki? Saibh 17:13, 21 March 2008 (EDT)

Sometimes on the featured picture page, the bar for "have you voted yet" goes through the picture, obscuring the image. Does this happen on other peoples computers, or just mine because it has a wider screen? And is there anything that can be done to fix it? Thanks--Magnus orion 17:34, 2 April 2008 (EDT)
- It's not just you, I've brought this up before. Unfortunately, I have no idea what causes it or how to fix it. Right now it's not doing it for me, on several widescreen monitors; I'm assuming it is for you? Once this happens to me again I'll try messing with the code to see what's up, but until then... You'll have to do it yourself (viewing the source for the Main Page and messing with the code for it in the Sandbox would be the best way to go about it). --Ando (T : C) 17:55, 2 April 2008 (EDT)
- Yeah, that was mentioned a while ago by Ando (above), but nothing ever got done because he was apparently the only one who experienced it. If you could take a screenshot and post it here to show the issue, perhaps we can devise a solution? The code's just something I bodged together, and I'm far from an expert, so I'm sure it could stand to be improved :) —Adam (talk) 18:05, 2 April 2008 (EDT)
- thanks for your help (So thats what sandbox is for!). Is what I have in there now work? I found it on your talk page, Ando :D. But I don't know how it will affect it in the scrunched up space of the main page... Yeah I'll Take a screen shot and post it here--Magnus orion 18:08, 2 April 2008 (EDT)
Here it is--Magnus orion 18:23, 2 April 2008 (EDT)
- Alright, man, I need details. For instance! What are your operating system, resolution, and browser? The differences here could be causing this (some kind of browser incompatibility or something). For the record, I'm running Firefox on Vista, on a 1440 x 900 resolution. --Ando (T : C) 18:28, 2 April 2008 (EDT)
Uh-oh... I'm no good with computers at all (esp. with "lingo"). I'm running vista, too and basic Inernet explorer, But I don't know what resolution is... ARRGH! This is probably something I should know too, now I feel stupid. Is it screen size perhaps? --Magnus orion 18:34, 2 April 2008 (EDT)
- Hey, it's okay, man. :P Yes, "resolution" is "screen size". In Vista, just pull up the Start Menu in the bottom left, click "Control Panel", then select "Personalize", then finally "Display Settings". The resolution is displayed there. --Ando (T : C) 18:39, 2 April 2008 (EDT)
Sorry 'bout that... It says 1280 X 800... --Magnus orion 18:50, 2 April 2008 (EDT)
- Um, guys, I fixed the problem... My solution is in the sandbox right now--Magnus orion 21:11, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
