History
Twilight Princess
Hundreds of years before Twilight Princess, the Sword of the Sages was thrust into Ganondorf's chest in hopes of executing him. The attempt was in vain thanks to the Triforce of Power in Ganondorf's hand. Taking no harm but a glowing wound in his chest, Ganondorf took the sword and killed the Sage. Ganondorf kept the sword for many years and used it later in the game in the final battle with Link.
The Sword of the Sages appears to be a longsword, and the blade's length suggests that it may be a two-handed weapon. However, Ganondorf wields it one- and two-handed; it is impossible to determine whether he could do so without heightened strength from the Triforce. It should also be noted that when looking at the blade while Ganondorf is wielding it, the color changed from white to a glowing red. However, this is probably just an effect of the lighting, as Link's blade glows the same color during the battle.
It is suspected that Ganondorf continues to carry the Sword of the Sages in Twilight Princess because he wants the Sages, who attempted to execute him, to see what has been done with their own blade.
