Swords are the perhaps the most famous weapons in the Legend of Zelda series. Coupled with a shield, swords are the signature weapons of the protagonist, Link. Link has used a sword in every game of the Zelda series, and in some games he has used as many as four or five distinct swords.
Swords are often also important in the plots of various games - in particular, sections of some games require the player to either find a certain magical sword (such as the Master Sword) or upgrading Link's current sword to become more powerful. Notable swords that Link has used in the series include the Master Sword (which has appeared in many games of the series), the Four Sword and the Phantom Sword (from the game Phantom Hourglass).
Being left-handed, Link traditionally wields swords in his left hand. However, occasional technical restrictions have meant that this is not universal. Notably, in the Wii version of Twilight Princess, the game was mirrored and Link's sword was in his right hand.
Other characters in the Zelda series have also used swords, on occasion. Princess Zelda herself has occasionally used or carried swords, although rarely in actual combat (see Zelda's Swords). Various enemies have also used swords, including (but not limited to):
- Stalfos in most of their game appearances
- Lizalfos and some related creatures (such as Aeralfos in Twilight Princess)
- Gerudo warriors
- Darknuts (see Darknut Sword)
- Phantom Ganon (see Phantom Ganon's Sword)
- Ganondorf (see Ganon's Sword)
