The Sage Medallions are six medallions related to six of the seven Sages in Ocarina of Time (Princess Zelda being the one without a medallion). They represent the awakening and power of their respective Sages. Link obtained each of them after awakening a new Sage. The symbols on the medallions reappeared in the Arbiter's Grounds in Twilight Princess.

As for gameplay purposes, the Sage Medallions replace pictures of the Sages on the quest status page, as used in A Link to the Past and Four Swords Adventures, to indicate to the player how many Sages he has already freed. However, it seems that during the early development stages of Ocarina of Time, Nintendo intended that the Sage Medallions actually could be used by Link. There exist several early screenshots of Link having the Forest Medallion equipped. What exactly the medallions were supposed to do remains a mystery however, as Link is never seen actually using a medallion in those screenshots. A theory is that they were Link's original way of warping through Hyrule and that they eventually were replaced by the songs Sheik teaches Link during the course of his quest.

It also seems that the Forest Medallion and the Water Medallion were originally going to be the "Wind Medallion" and the "Ice Medallion", but that their names were altered during development for unknown reasons. Remnants of their supposed original theme are present in the released version of Ocarina of Time, such as the presence of an ice-themed mini-dungeon and Saria's part in Ganon's Castle being wind-themed[citation needed].

Order

The Sage Medallions can be obtained in nearly any order imaginable by simply entering a dungeon, obtaining its main item, and then not finishing the dungeon. The player can then move on to different dungeons with the new equipment. The Light Medallion must always come first, however, and it is worth noting that the Water Temple can be entered and completed before ever entering the Fire Temple. Also, the Shadow Temple cannot even be entered prior to beating the Water Temple. There are a total of sixty different ways to beat the temples.
