Piranha Plants are enemies in Link's Awakening.[1] Piranha Plants are from the Mario franchise and made their overall debut in Super Mario Bros.

Characteristics[]

Piranha Plants are immobile Venus Flytrap-like flowers that emerge from pipes at regular intervals and try to bite Link (or Mario in the Super Mario series as he passes by.

Mainline appearances[]

Link's Awakening[]

Piranha Plants appear in side-scrolling areas of dungeons, particularly in the Bottle Grotto and Key Cavern. Link can simply wait for these plants to return to their pipes to safely pass or jump over them with the Roc's Feather, or he can use his Sword to defeat them.

Crossover appearances[]

Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[]

Piranaha Plants appear as obstacles in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Unlike in the Super Mario platforming games and Link's Awakening, these Piranha Plants are not in pipes, but instead on the field in certain courses, lunging at any approaching racers. If a racer is hit by a Piranha Plant, their kart topples over.

In Hyrule Circuit course, Piranha Plants are replaced with their The Legend of Zelda series equivalent, Deku Babas, which behave identically to them.

Trivia[]

  • Manhandla in Oracle of Seasons is depicted as a Buzz Blob-like creature with four Piranha Plant heads on its sides. These plants spit fireballs at Link, similarly to how some Piranha Plants in the Mario series breathe fire. In the Japanese manual, Manhandlas are said to be "jumbo-sized" Piranha Plants.
