Use(s) Allows wearer to sniff out Magic Mushrooms

The Mask of Scents is a mask in Majora's Mask. It resembles the head of a pig.

Location and Uses

The Mask of Scents is given to Link by the Deku Butler, but only if he beats him in his race. After clearing the Woodfall Temple and bringing the Deku Princess back to the Deku Palace, Link may talk to the Deku Butler, who is waiting to meet the hero in the Deku Shrine outside of the palace.[1] Once there, he will ask Link to race him. The race is far easier to complete with the Bunny Hood equipped. If Link manages to keep up, the Deku Butler will say how it reminds him of racing with his son, and gives him the Mask of Scents in return.[2] The mask was also originally owned by his son.[3]

When worn, the mask imbues the wearer with the ability to sniff for the scent of and find Magic Mushrooms, two of which are given to Kotake to create Blue Potions. Because Blue Potions can be bought elsewhere (although for more Rupees), and given the obscurity of the mushrooms' location, the use of the mask is relatively rare; however, Link can still receive a free Blue Potion in exchange for the mushroom.[4] Mushrooms appear as clouds of purple mist and can be scooped into a Bottle.[5]

  • The mask's design is based on specially-trained pigs that are used to sniff for truffles, a rare fungus.
  • Link's voice changes when the mask is donned. He snorts and grunts similarly to a pig when he rolls or swings his sword.
  • On the second row of the Mask Subscreen, the Keaton Mask (Fox), Bremen Mask (Falco), Bunny Hood (Peppy), Don Gero's Mask (Slippy), and Mask of Scents (Pigma) are said to represent Star Fox characters.
  • If Link puts on the Mask of Scents while in the Stock Pot Inn, a purple fume cloud can be seen in the performers' room protruding from the pair of boxers on a bed, and another fume cloud can be seen coming from the toilet downstairs. In these places, mushrooms can be obtained with the Bottle.

  1. "It seems our butler has taken somewhat of a liking to you, Mr. Link. I believe you'll find him waiting in the shrine that will be to your right when you leave the palace." — Deku Princess (Majora's Mask)
  2. "Actually, when I see you, I am reminded of my son who left home long ago... Somehow, I feel as if I am once again racing with my son..." — Deku Butler (Majora's Mask)
  3. "My son often used that mask to find mushrooms in the forest. Oh, how I long for those days." — Deku Butler (Majora's Mask)
  4. "What's that? You want a Blue Potion, do you? Well, you gave me a mushroom, so I'll give you one for free." — Kotake (Majora's Mask)
  5. "The power of this mask allows you to see what you can smell..." — Tatl (Majora's Mask)
