This Maku Tree (マカの木, lit. Maka Tree) is the guardian of Labrynna, and guardian of Nayru. Almost as soon as she and Link meet, a small group of Veran's forces attack the Maku tree in the past, making her vanish in the present. By travelling to the past, Link was able to save the Maku Tree, then only the Maku Sprout, from death. It was this rescue that caused the Maku Tree to fall in love with Link, immediately proposing to him. She is left without an answer for the length of the game.
The Maku Tree, fortunately, is able to focus on the more important task at hand, and begins to try and help Link defeat Veran. However, even though she was rescued, the Maku Tree has lost most of her memory, sealed away in the Essences of Time. To return the Maku Tree's memories, Link had to travel across Labrynna, past and present, to obtain the eight essences, overcoming many trials along the way.
The help the Maku Tree can give Link is limited, but useful. She will point Link in the correct direction for any essence except for the Falling Star, which she cannot sense. She also tells Link when Ambi leaves the palace, giving him a chance to rescue Nayru.
After reobtaining her memory, the Maku Tree gives Link a Huge Maku Seed, which allows him to penetrate the darkness of the Black Tower, and traverse to the higher levels.
In the linked game, after Link has rescued Princess Zelda from Twinrova, the Maku Tree is able to teleport them out of the crumbling lair
Trivia
