Not to be confused with the Great Moblin.

The Moblin Chief is a Sub-Boss in Link's Awakening.[1][note 1] He is a large red Moblin that appears as the chief of the Moblins.

Characteristics[]

Link's Awakening[]

The Moblin Chief is the leader of a gang of Moblins that kidnapped Madam MeowMeow's pet "dog"[3] while Link was exploring the Tail Cave. Link sets off to rescue MeowMeow's pet, and locates the Moblin Cave found at Tal Tal Heights. After fighting his Moblin and Sword Moblin minions, Link runs into the Moblin Chief in the penultimate room, where he is holding BowWow hostage.[4] He will fire projectiles while jumping around, before beating his chest and charging forward with his head lowered trying to impale Link on his horns. This attack is fast and can cause a lot of damage, but if Link moves out of the way, the Moblin Chief will instead slam into the back wall and stun himself, leaving him vulnerable to Link's blade. He has a surprising amount of stamina, but enough strikes will eventually defeat him.

Other Appearances[]

Link's Awakening (Cagiva)[]

In Link's Awakening manga by Ataru Cagiva, King Moblin appears in chapter 2, where he captures BowWow much like in the game. King Moblin attempts to call for his guards when Link enters, only to find out that they have already been defeated. In response, King Moblin takes out his Bow and fires arrows at Link. When Link dodges this attack, King Moblin angrily charges at him only for the hero to jump over his attack, resulting in the King Moblin crashing into a wall. While King Moblin is in a daze from the collision, he is struck down by Link.

Nomenclature[]

The Moblin Chief's Japanese name, Oyaburin, is a portmanteau of the Japanese word for "boss", 親分 (Oyabun) and the suffix "-blin". Oya also means "parent", so the Moblin Chief could be seen as both the leader and parent of the other Moblins.

Moblin Chief shares its Japanese name with Great Moblin, Club Moblin and Big Blin.

Notes

  1. The Moblin Chief was referred to as King Moblin in all versions of Link's Awakening prior to Link's Awakening for Nintendo Switch.[2] However, as the name was changed in Link's Awakening for Nintendo Switch, it is no longer considered Canon.
