The Legend of Zelda
Gel are located exclusively in the labyrinths of the first Legend of Zelda title and appear as a small jelly-like monsters.[1] Gels are smaller versions of Zol that appear when a Zol is defeated. Each Zol will split into two gels. However, in early dungeons plenty of gels exist where a Zol was never present. Gels are all but harmless because of their rather slow movement and lack of attacks. A simple sword slash will take out a gel, but they are easily defeated with nearly any item in game including the boomerang.[2].
The Adventure of Link
The gel does not make an appearance in The Adventure of Link. However, there are two very similar enemies known as a bit and bot. These creatures resemble the larger Zol creatures from the original Legend of Zelda and are described as a jelly-like monster in the game manual.[3] The same exact wording that describes the gel in the Legend of Zelda manual.
A Link to the Past
In A Link to the Past there is little difference between a gel and zol. There are green, red, and yellow creatures that resemble these creatures. However, zols have lost the ability to split into smaller gels and thus it is unclear if these creatures are actually gels. Another enemy within A Link to the Past, known as a [slime] resembles that of a Zol from the original Link to the Past and has similar attributes to both a zol and a gel.
Link's Awakening
In Link's Awakening, the small red gels act very similarly to their Legend of Zelda counterparts. Gel are native creatures to Koholint Island.[4]. They begin as larger red zols and once they are defeated, will split into two smaller gels. However, these red gels are unable to cause damage, but instead they jump and attach themselves to Link, which will make Link move much slower. Similar incarnations of the Link's Awakening type of gel appear in both Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages.
