Sage Medallions
From Zelda Wiki.org
The Sage Medallions are six medallions related to six of the seven Sages in Ocarina of Time (Princess Zelda being the one without a medallion). They represent the awakening and power of their respective Sages. Link obtained each of them after awakening a new Sage. The symbols on the medallions reappeared in the Arbiter's Grounds in Twilight Princess.

Generally Accepted Order of Medallion Obtainment
Light Medallion
The Light Medallion[1] is the first medallion Link gains on his quest to save Hyrule. It is given to him by the ancient Sage of Light, Rauru, after Link awakens as the Hero of Time.[2]
Forest Medallion
The Forest Medallion[3] is the second medallion Link gains on his quest to save Hyrule after defeating Phantom Ganon in the Forest Temple. It is given to him by the new Sage of Forest, Saria.[4]
Fire Medallion
The Fire Medallion[5] is the third medallion Link gains on his quest to save Hyrule. The Sage of Fire, Darunia, awards Link this medallion after defeating Volvagia within the Fire Temple and freeing all of the trapped Gorons within. According to Darunia, it contains the "power of the fire spirits". He also considers it a token of his friendship with Link.[6]
In the beta version of Ocarina of Time the Fire Medallion had the effect of Din's Fire.
Water Medallion
The Water Medallion[7] is the fourth medallion Link gains on his quest to save Hyrule. The Sage of Water, Ruto, awards Link with this medallion after defeating Morpha in the depths of the Water Temple.[8]
Shadow Medallion
The Shadow Medallion[9] is the fifth medallion Link gains on his quest to save Hyrule after defeating Bongo Bongo in the Shadow Temple. It is given to him by the new Sage of Shadow, Impa.[10]
Spirit Medallion
The Spirit Medallion[11] is the sixth medallion Link gains on his quest to save Hyrule after defeating Koume and Kotake and their fused form, Twinrova, at the Spirit Temple. It is given to him by the new Sage of Spirit, Nabooru.[12]
In the beta version of Ocarina of Time the Spirit Medallion had the same effect as the Lens of Truth. [citation needed]
Method of Obtainment
While the listing above is the generally accepted and most common medallion progression throughout the game, the Sage Medallions can be secured in nearly any order imaginable by simply entering a dungeon, obtaining its main item, and then not finishing the dungeon. The player can then move on to different dungeons with the new equipment. The Light Medallion must always come first, however, and it is worth noting that the Water Temple can be entered and completed before ever entering the Fire Temple. Also, the Shadow Temple cannot even be entered prior to beating the Water Temple. There are a total of sixty different ways to beat the temples.
Beta Version
As for gameplay purposes, the Sage Medallions replace pictures of the Sages on the quest status page, as used in A Link to the Past and Four Swords Adventures, to indicate to the player how many Sages he has already freed. However, it seems that during the early development stages of Ocarina of Time, Nintendo intended that the Sage Medallions actually could be used by Link. There exist several early screenshots of Link having the Forest Medallion equipped. What exactly the medallions were supposed to do remains a mystery, as Link is never seen actually using a medallion in those screenshots.
Theory Warning: Be advised that the following article or section contains unconfirmed, fan-made theories or speculation.
- A theory states they could have been used to cast spells instead of the current way. Indeed the Forest Medallion resembles one of the Spell Medallions from A Link to the Past, according to the beta version of the game the Fire Medallion had the effect of Din's Fire, and the Spirit Medallion had the effect of the Lens of Truth. It also seems that the Forest Medallion and the Water Medallion were originally going to be the "Wind Medallion" and the "Ice Medallion", but that their names were changed during development for unknown reasons (remanents of their supposed original theme are present in the released version of Ocarina of Time, such as the presence of an ice-themed mini-dungeon and Saria's part in Ganon's Tower being wind-themed). [citation needed] Considering that, it is possible that the beta Wind Medallion had a similar or same effect to Farore's Wind or to the Bombos Medallion, and that the Ice Medallion had a similar or same effect to Nayru's Love.
- Another theory is that they were Link's original way of warping through Hyrule that were eventually replaced by the songs that Sheik teaches Link during the course of his quest.
Trivia
- The Forest Medallion resembles the Bombos Medallion from A Link to the Past.
