Many parts of Hyrule are possessed by the evil that is Ganon, even the palaces themselves. Some rooms in the dark underworlds have floor tiles that will come alive and hurl themselves at Link. The best way for Link to get past them is to not just dodge them but to place himself in a corner. Depending on game, he can then either fend them off with his sword or simply crouch behind his shield. In A Link to the Past and Oracle of Ages, the Cane of Somaria can be used to create temporary, but effective, barriers to hide behind.
In many appearances, the missing tiles leave a formation of a skull.
