Link has had several Fairy Companions over the course of the series. Whether their assistance is reluctant or voluntary, these fairy partners help Link along in his adventure, providing hints and assisting Link. The most notable of Link's fairy companions is Navi from Ocarina of Time. Several forest-dwelling races have fairy companions of their own, such as the Kokiri, who each have a guardian fairy from birth,[1] and the Skull Kid, who is seen with Tatl and Tael in Majora's Mask.

Link had been teased by other Kokiri, namely Mido, with shots such as "Mr. No-Fairy"[2]; until the Great Deku Tree assigned Navi to assist Link on his quest. Thus introducing the role of Companion Fairies to the Legend of Zelda series. Each of the fairies were given their own characteristics, abilities, and personalities. The out-of-universe purpose of them was to assist players with new control schemes for the consoles.

Navi

Main article: Navi

Navi, from Ocarina of Time, was assigned as Link's guardian fairy by the Great Deku Tree.[3] Previously, Link had been the only boy in the Kokiri Forest without a guardian fairy.[2] Navi assists Link by telling him enemy weaknesses and allowing him to use Z-Targeting to fight enemies and talk to people.[4] She will frequently interrupt Link's adventure to tell him where to go next. Navi left Link after his quest ended.

Tatl

Link's new fairy companion in Majora's Mask is Tatl, a fairy who functions very similarly to Navi but with a much more abrasive personality. She and her brother Tael were the Skull Kid's companions before being separated. Tatl reluctantly helped Link in order to find the Skull Kid and her brother.[5] Unlike Navi, Tatl only gives Link hints begrudgingly and doesn't have Navi's near-encyclopedic knowledge of enemy weaknesses.[6]

Ciela

The first and most prominent of Link's fairy companions in Phantom Hourglass is Ciela. Link is found by Ciela just as he washes up on Mercay Island. She appears to have lost her memories,[7] but is instructed by her "grandpa" Oshus to aid Link on his quest.[8] She acts as his stylus cursor, and even carries heavy items like the Hammer. Over the course of the game, it is revealed that she is the Spirit of Courage, one of the Servant Spirits who serve the Ocean King.[9][10] If Link obtains enough Spirit Gems and equips Ciela as his cursor, she allows him to fire Sword Beams.
