The Flames of Sorrow and Destruction burn brightly! Only the Flame of Despair remains! Eee hee hee hee! When the three flames are lit, we will offer the sacrifice and complete the Dark Rites. Then the Evil King shall return!
— Twinrova
The Dark Rites are an evil method of reincarnation featured in the Oracle Series. The basic concept is that when the three sinister flames (despair, destruction, and sorrow) are lit, and the blood of the holy sacrifice is sprinkled over the ashes of one who is deceased, the deceased one will be revived. The dark rites are, in effect, the flames themselves. The flames are lit only by causing the events they depict. When great death and tragedy grips the land, the flame of sorrow will ignite. When evil wreaks havoc on the land, the flame of destruction will light. When god has struck the hour, and death is inevitable, the flame of despair will burn. Koume and Kotake (Twinrova) use this method to revive Ganon.
Sorrow
The Flame of Sorrow was lit in Oracle of Ages by Veran, sorceress of shadows, when she used Nayru's powers to turn people to stone, change history and even kill people.
Destruction
The Flame of Destruction was lit as a combination of both games. Onox helped light it by screwing up the seasons in Oracle of Seasons, and Veran helped light it by helping Queen Ambi build the Black Tower, whose peak ends up as the location of Link's final fight against Veran.
Despair
The lighting of this flame was more subtle, but nonetheless real. When Onox captured Din, the seasons fell into chaos. When Veran posessed Nayru, the present was put into a state of urgency by changes in the past.
