Arrows are used with a bow. When the supply of arrows runs out, the bow becomes unusable until more are found or bought. The amount of arrows Link can hold can usually be upgraded during the adventure with a new arrow quiver. There are also arrow upgrades as Link progresses through the adventure in including Fire Arrows, Ice Arrows, Light Arrows, Silver Arrows, and the Bomb Arrow. On most, if not all, 3D Zelda games, shooting an arrow through a torch lights the arrow into a fire arrow. This is used to set off heat-activated switches in dungeons before you get the fire arrows. Strangely, on The Legend of Zelda, Link buys arrows in general, like he would buy an item. Instead of using arrows, whenever you shoot an arrow, you lose a rupee.
